Controlled removal of asbestos-cement sheets from a roof
Guide

How asbestos removal is done, step by step

Asbestos removal follows a strict method to protect workers and neighbours. See what happens at each stage, from the first visit to handover of the new roof.

Updated on

1. Site visit and assessment

We assess the roof: area, height, access, condition of sheets and structure, and site constraints.

2. Quote and work plan

After the visit we provide the quote and define the method, equipment and timeline. We prepare the documentation required before works begin.

3. Preparation and signage

We mark off the work area, protect the surroundings and prepare personal protective equipment and safe access.

4. Controlled removal

Sheets are dismantled whole, without breaking, sawing or dust-generating tools. Where applicable, the material is treated to fix the fibres before removal.

5. Packaging and transport

Waste is packed and labelled and goes by authorised transport to a licensed waste operator.

6. Cleaning and new roof

Once removal is finished the area is cleaned and the new roof — usually sandwich panel — is installed, with gutters, flashing and trims.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take?

It depends on the area and site conditions. The timeframe is stated in the quote after the site visit.

Do I have to leave the building?

In many cases activity can continue in unaffected areas; the work plan defines constraints for each job.

Is there dust or risk to neighbours?

The controlled removal method and signage exist precisely to prevent fibre release and protect the surroundings.
