How to identify asbestos and asbestos-cement

You cannot confirm asbestos by sight alone, but some signs give important clues. This guide explains how to recognise asbestos-cement and how to safely confirm whether your material contains asbestos.

Updated on

Signs it may be asbestos-cement

  • Rigid corrugated sheets, grey or whitish, often with moss and lichen
  • Building constructed or roofed before the late 1990s
  • Rough, porous, brittle surface that flakes
  • Gutters, pipes or tanks in grey cement-like material
  • Building documents mentioning asbestos-cement

Is asbestos-cement the same as asbestos?

Not exactly. Asbestos-cement is cement reinforced with fibres. For many years those fibres were asbestos; later, synthetic or organic fibres were used. Old asbestos-cement should therefore be presumed to contain asbestos until proven otherwise.

How to confirm for certain

  1. 01Do not collect samples unprotected — breaking or scraping releases fibres.
  2. 02Contact a specialist company or accredited laboratory for sampling and analysis.
  3. 03With the result, decide the best solution: monitoring, encapsulation or removal.

I know it has asbestos. Now what?

AV Metal does the site visit, provides a quote and carries out the asbestos removal and new roof. You can also learn how the process works, step by step.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my roof sheets contain asbestos?

Old asbestos-cement sheets should be treated as containing asbestos until analysis proves otherwise.

Is there asbestos-cement without asbestos?

Yes — sheets made after the ban use other fibres. Only analysis or manufacturer documentation can confirm.

Can I send a sample for analysis myself?

You should avoid it. Sampling can release fibres. Ask a specialist company or laboratory.
