The asbestos ban
The use and placing on the market of asbestos is banned in the European Union, a rule applied in Portugal. Materials already installed are not automatically removed — but any intervention is subject to specific rules.
Protection of workers
Decree-Law no. 266/2007 sets minimum requirements for protecting workers against the risks of exposure to asbestos at work. Among other things it requires risk assessment, training, protective equipment and a work plan for asbestos operations, which is notified to the labour conditions authority (ACT).
Public buildings, facilities and equipment
Law no. 2/2011 requires the identification and removal of asbestos materials in public buildings, facilities and equipment, with a register and scheduled interventions.
Asbestos waste
Construction waste containing asbestos is classed as hazardous waste and must be packaged, transported and disposed of by licensed operators with the applicable paperwork. The removal company should guarantee this chain.
What this means for you
